2007 Walk To Cure Diabetes

Juvenile Diabetes Research foundation

Support Tom Meny in the 2007 Walk to Cure Diabetes

Greetings!

I’m writing to you to ask for your support in a very special cause.

This year, I’ll be taking part in the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation’s Walk to Cure Diabetes along with a half-million other walkers across the country. Our goal: To raise $100 million to help fund research for a cure for type 1 diabetes and its complications.

As some of you know, earlier this year I was diagnosed with Type II Diabetes (sometimes known as “adult onset” diabetes) and therefore this cause is personally important to me.

Type 1, or juvenile, diabetes, is a devastating, often deadly disease that affects millions of people–a large and growing percentage of them children.

Many people think type 1 diabetes can be controlled by insulin. While insulin does keep people with type 1 diabetes alive, it is NOT a cure. Aside from the daily challenges of living with type 1 diabetes, there are many severe, often fatal, complications caused by the disease.

That’s the bad news… and yes, it’s pretty bad.

The good news, though, is that a cure for type 1 diabetes is within reach. In fact, JDRF funding and leadership is associated with most major scientific breakthroughs in type 1 diabetes research to date. And JDRF funds a major portion of all type 1 diabetes research worldwide, more than any other charity.

I’m writing to ask for your support because now more than ever, EACH of us can be a part of bringing about a cure. Each of us can make a real difference

Won’t you please give to JDRF as generously as you’re able? From the links below you can donate as little as $5. Every dollar counts.

Together, we can make the cure a reality.

Thank you,

Tom Meny

Texas’ Henry charged with obstruction, tampering

AUSTIN, Texas — Texas freshman running back James Henry has been charged with two felony counts of obstruction and tampering with evidence, making him the sixth Longhorns player arrested since June.

Henry, who was arrested Monday, is accused of beating up one of the victims of a July home invasion that allegedly involved two other players, Andre Jones and Robert Joseph.

Henry was booked into Travis County Jail where his bail was set at $30,000. Under team policy, a felony charge means an automatic suspension. Athletic department spokesman John Bianco said coach Mack Brown was expected to issue a statement.

Henry has played in two games on special teams for the No. 7 Longhorns (3-0).

The two third-degree felonies are “obstruction or retaliation” and “tampering or fabricating physical evidence,” according to court records published by the Austin Statesman-American. According to the arrest affidavit, Austin police say Henry retaliated on behalf of Joseph.

Austin police learned of Henry’s involvement by listening to taped recordings of Joseph’s phone calls from jail, said Det. Anthony Bigongiari.

During the investigation of the robbery, one of the victims told police that some of Joseph’s friends had assaulted them. In one of the taped phone calls, Henry said he “went over there and whupped” one of the victims, throwing them on the ground and punching and kicking them in the head several times, according to the arrest affidavit.

The affidavit says Henry admitteded that he’d confronted the victims and gotten into a fight with them, according to the Statesman-American.

Henry, who did not participate in the robbery, was charged with tampering because police believe he disposed of a backpack containing items stolen in the home invasion, Bigongiari said.

Police also charged a third person, Eddie Ramirez, who is not a football player, with threatening the victims.

Henry’s arrest is the latest trouble for a program reeling under a string of arrests. On Monday, Brown reinstated linebacker Sergio Kindle and defensive end Henry Melton, who had been suspended for the first three games because of drunken driving arrests over the summer.

Last week, senior safety Tyrell Gatewood was suspended indefinitely after his arrest on drug charges. Freshman defensive back Ben Wells, who was riding with Gatewood when he was pulled over, was given a citation for possession of drug paraphernalia and released.

Jones remains suspended from the team. Joseph had already left the team before his July arrest because of an earlier incident.

And another Longhorn gets arrested

Gatewood is fifth Longhorn arrested since June

AUSTIN, Texas — Texas senior safety Tyrell Gatewood was released from jail Thursday after his arrest on drug charges, the fifth arrest of a Longhorns player since June.

Freshman defensive back Ben Wells, 18, who was riding with Gatewood when he was pulled over late Wednesday, was given a citation for possession of drug paraphernalia and released.

Gatewood, 22, was charged with two counts of possession of a dangerous drug. It was his second drug-related arrest in a year, although misdemeanor possession charges were dropped after his arrest last September. He was suspended for a game.

Texas athletic officials said they planned to release a statement later Thursday.

Gatewood and Wells were pulled over by a Travis County sheriff’s deputy for failing to signal a turn. Smelling marijuana, the deputy searched the vehicle and found pot, Xanax and a baby bottle full of codeine cough syrup, said Travis County sheriff’s spokesman Roger Wade.

Bond was set for Gatewood at $2,500 for each count, but he was released on personal recognizance. Gatewood also was being held on an arrest warrant from Dallas County on a reckless driving charge from March. Bond for that charge was set at $500.

Linebacker Sergio Kindle and defensive end Henry Melton, both arrested on drunken driving charges during the summer, are serving three-game suspensions that will end after Saturday’s game at Central Florida.

Freshman linebacker Dre Jones was suspended indefinitely last month after being charged with aggravated robbery. Former safety Robert Joseph was charged in the same incident. Joseph had already left the team after being arrested in a separate incident earlier in the summer.

Gatewood, from Tyler, switched from receiver to safety before the 2006 season, and has played mostly on special teams.

Wells graduated early from Beaumont Ozen High School and enrolled at Texas so he could participate in spring drills. He was named to the Associated Press Sports Editors Class 4A all-state team last season.
